אַוְסַיָּא

אַוְסֵי, אַוְסַיָּא(or אוּ׳) m. pl. (√אף soft. into או; cmp. אַף, אָנַף also אֶפֶס) nose, nostrils. Sabb.67a ואאוסי דגוריתא and on the nostrils of the young lioness. B. Bath.73b דסליק עליה באוסיה אכלה טינא ומית Ms. R. (ed. דיתבא ליה אכלה טינא באוסי׳, Ms. M. אבלה, Ar. ed. Koh. incorr., v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) into whose nostrils a ‘mud-eater (worm) entered, and the fish died. Pes.112a ידא אאוסיאוכ׳ (Ms. M. a. Ar. א־פגא) putting the hand to the nose is a step to fear (indicating anxiety). Ḥull.67b ועיילי באוסַיֵּיה and they (the worms) creep into its nostrils.
